Are Lyon out of the title race?

On Saturday, Lyon suffered a 2-1 loss to Montpellier. It would be the type of game where they are kicking themselves that they were not able to win.

It was a game Lyon dominated in. They had 24 shots to Montpellier’s 12, but poorly only 8 were on target with a further 9 being blocked by Montpellier. This was a similar performance as the game vs Metz a few weeks ago for Lyon, where they deserved to win but were unable to get over the line.

That result puts Lyon’s place in the Ligue 1 title race in doubt. These type of results have become a regular occurrence for the Les Gones and due to the strength of Lille and PSG, these types of results are big hiccups in their title chances.

I am not writing them out of the title race just yet, but the strength that PSG have showed in recent weeks and especially Lille over the past months, does make them less likely to front some sort of a challenge. It would be a big shame for Memphis Depay to miss out on a Ligue 1 championship due to his teammates, as he has been their best player by far and I would say the best player in Ligue 1 this year. He currently has 13 goals and 6 assists, and at times has single handedly carried Lyon to wins. Which is where Lyon have faultered. They have relied too much on Depay at times. Yes, they have had good performances from Karl Toko-Ekambi and Tinotenda Kadawere but the rest of the team would need to step up and show the same resolve they did in Lisbon to defeat Manchester City.

Now, lets talk about Lille. At the beginning of the year they seemed to be grinding out results and did not look like challengers to PSG. But their game against Bordeaux changed that as they won very convincingly. It has helped that Yusuf Yazici is back to his creative best. With Burak Yilmaz also out injured, you would think that Les Douges would struggle with goals, but luckily their North-American duo of Jonathan David and Timothy Weah have both finally found their feet in France and are showing that they do have a ton of potential still. Additionally, in midfield we have seen the return of Renato Sanches. This has helped Lille a lot due to the drive he possesses, allowing them to have somewhat of a link between defence and attack, while also being a solid defensive outfit.

Talking Points:
  • Napoli have reignited their title race as a Lorenzo Insigne penalty helped them dispatch of Juventus, who themselves missed out on a big opportunity to close the gap on AC Milan and Inter Milan. With AC Milan surprisingly losing 2-0 to Spezia.
  • Borussia Dortmund continue their poor form after a 2-2 draw with TSG Hoffenheim. Defensive mishaps best sum up this game. Dortmund gifted Ismael Bebou two great chances to give Hoffenheim the lead, but his poor finishing meant the game stayed level. It was an end to end game, but when the game came to an end a 2-2 draw seemed right due to the poor performance of both teams.
  • Borussia Monchengladbach have announced that Marco Rose will join Borussia Dortmund at the end of the season. I am in pain
